What follows is a brief, and by no means complete listing of the families of materials and some suggestions as to their applicability to certain projects. For example, no matter how good you think an Alpaca sweater would look on a baby, the care it would require would make it very impractical. A washable synthetic with an “Alpaca” type look would be the way to go. Remember, we knit and create for you. If you desire it, we can make it.
SYNTHETIC YARNS - Mostly acrylics and Dacrons. These fibers vary from relatively inexpensive to moderately expensive and knit up in a variety of textures and weights. There is a vast array colors available in synthetics from mild pastels to vibrant neon hues. Synthetics offer easy care and can be laundered at home with virtually no loss of color or shape. Recommended for baby items, stuffed animal toys, and afghans but can be used for any project.
SYNTHETIC BLENDS - Usually an acrylic yarn blended with any number of natural fibers, wool, silk, mohair, etc. in different percentages and often more than one fiber may be blended in. Just a bit more expensive than a pure synthetic but both look and feel are worth it. Colors and texture choices are many. Blends are easier to care for than 100% natural fibers but some may require hand washing or dry cleaning. Can be used for any item and keeps it’s shape well.
WOOL - The “classic” knitted material. “Wool” is not a generic term at Knit & Tuck, we love to work in wool and have used most of the commercial and home spun types. Wool can run the price gamut, from basic knitting wool to “washable” wool and is available in many colors and textures but selection may be limited depending the specific type of wool desired. Wool doesn't have to be the scratchy material it used to be, washable wools are great, look good, and offer easy care. Again, any type of wool can be specified for any item you would like.
COTTON - Like wool, cotton can vary greatly in price but makes a great sweater or other garment. Cotton sweaters and cover ups are just right for Spring, Summer and Fall at the beach or on the golf course. Available in a wide variety of feels and colors, cotton “breathes” and stretches but will return to it’s basic shape when laundered. The cotton feel only gets better with age and wear of the garment.
HONORABLE MENTION FIBERS - Not really Specialty Fibers, but materials that will set any garment above the rest. Expensive? Yes. Worth it? Definitely.
LINEN - A nice fiber for a natural look. Color selection is limited, but rich and elegant. Hand washing or dry cleaning a must.
SILK - Very expensive, but glorious. Many colors befitting this wonderful fiber are available. Silk knits up into beautiful special occasion and evening wear as well as “just a sweater”. Dry cleaning recommended.
CHENILLE - Scrumptious, great with any article. Cuddly in an afghan. A bit more expensive than some fibers, but can be oh so worth it. Easy care, wash and dry for most.
ANGORA - Spun rabbit fur. Fluffy and heavenly soft. Expensive, but again worth it if you require soft for yourself or as a gift. Dry cleaning also recommended.
SPECIALTY FIBERS - Dog hair, Llama, Buffalo and wool blends with other spinable hairs, like mink are available but may be very expensive. We can also spin any hair or fiber that you provide us into a knittable yarn and make anything you would like.
ENHANCEMENTS, ADORNMENTS, GLITTER AND BAUBLES - Ribbon and metallic yarns when knit have a distinctively different look. Both may be used as a highlight or base material for the entire item. Beads, sequins and even leather strips can be knit into any garment as a pattern or for adornment. Want something special knit into a sweater or any other item? Contact us and we'll let you know if we can do it.
